Dan Bulleit
Our Namesake
(b.1956 – d.2021) Dan Bulleit was a master oil painter from southern Indiana, celebrated for his contributions to contemporary American narrative painting. From an early age, Bulleit demonstrated a remarkable talent for capturing the often-overlooked beauty of the people and landscapes surrounding his Floyd County home.
Bulleit pursued formal education in painting and illustration at the Colorado Institute of Art, and during this time he studied alongside contemporaries like Quang Ho, as well as under renowned master artists such as Robert Heindel and Bernie Fuchs. Fuchs later referred to Bulleit as “my favorite Art Director I’ve ever worked with.”
In the late 1990s, after two decades in Colorado, Bulleit returned to his Indiana roots. He assumed the role of Senior Art Director at Automobile Quarterly magazine, overseeing its artistic direction until the publication ceased in 2012. Following this, Bulleit dedicated himself entirely to painting. Remarkably, Bulleit would produce more original artworks during this final decade of his life between 2013 and 2021 than at any other point in his career.
Bulleit believed deeply in the power of storytelling to uplift others. His paintings offer glimpses into vibrant worlds filled with lively characters and emotive light, inviting viewers to reflect on the grandeur of their own everyday experiences. His masterful style encourages us to find wonder in the regular and to envision ourselves as the heroes of our own stories.
His legacy of inspiring and uplifting others through storytelling is the foundation of our gallery's mission: to support and preserve the power of storytelling in the arts. Selected Limited Edition Artist Reproductions of Dan’s work are available under “Featured Works: tab above.
